For those considering Ozempic for weight loss, it’s crucial to understand the potential risks involved. Known for its effects on blood sugar levels and appetite, Ozempic has gained popularity as a weight-loss aid. However, with benefits come possible downsides. In this article, we’ll dive into the key Ozempic weight loss risks, including side effects, long-term impact, and other important considerations.
Oh, the things I would do to stick a nice needle full of semaglutide into my stomach.
Ozempic, this so-called “miracle” diabetes medication that’s stormed its way into the weight loss scene, is everywhere—from TikToks to dinner table convos. And honestly, I get the hype. Imagine shedding pounds without constantly counting calories, with the instant “fix” that everyone keeps talking about. But even with all the temptations, I won’t be jumping on the Ozempic train anytime soon—and I have reasons that go deeper than just avoiding a quick fix.
But before I go into why this might not be the best choice for me—or for most people—let me make one thing clear. For those dealing with severe obesity or health issues tied to weight, a tool like Ozempic could be a lifeline. It’s a jumpstart, especially when losing even a small amount of weight could drastically improve health markers. And if that’s what someone needs to help them live a healthier, more active life, then no shame. Everyone’s journey is different.
I’ve struggled with my hormones since I was 15. Imagine being a 15-year-old baby (though, of course, I totally thought I had the whole world figured out back then). You can’t even drive a car yet, and you meet this stranger in a white coat with the title of “Doctor” who tells you that you have a 1% chance of having children naturally and that your hormones are basically those of a “perimenopausal 50-year-old woman”.
In all honesty, it probably only sat with me for all of 20 minutes. I didn’t even want to have kids anyway. She told me this birth control pill should solve all of my problems. So really, what was the problem?? Other than the fact that those (harsh, grueling) words were seeping… sinking deeply into my body. They sunk into the depths of my being, a trauma I didn’t even realize was now embedded in me. I carried those tiny trauma seeds with me, and now I see how they’ve grown roots in my relationship with my body.
Estrogen, stress, and that inner critic have kept me in a cycle, clinging to body fat while making it feel impossible to find a comfortable, lasting workout routine. I’m self-conscious in my skin. I don’t want to bare myself in tight workout clothes for fear of everyone critiquing the pooch that sticks out farther than most girls my age or the roll that spills out a little extra between the gap of my leggings and my tight sports bra.
I’ve had more meltdowns (than I can count on one hand) while trying to find an outfit for a night out, and more often than not, they’ve led me to breakding down and skipping the entire event. I’ve missed out on precious moments with my beautiful, skinny friends, feeling like they could never understand my struggle to find a skirt that fit just right. Recent studies show that while Ozempic can lead to rapid weight loss, it’s often not the type of weight loss we’d want if we knew the whole story. While shedding a few pounds might sound appealing, losing muscle—something critical to our overall health and vitality—is not. It’s a dangerous trade-off.
So, what’s the big deal about muscle mass? It turns out, muscle isn’t just about aesthetics or strength; it’s key to our longevity and health. Studies, including one published in JAMA Network, have found that maintaining muscle mass can be a major factor in reducing risks of age-related diseases like Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and even heart disease. Muscle supports our metabolism, protects our joints, and strengthens our bones—all critical components for a long and healthy life.
Why Muscle Matters More Than the Scale
Losing muscle might mean we lose weight on the scale, but it also means losing a primary defense mechanism against chronic diseases and the natural aging process. So, while we might achieve the short-term results of fitting into smaller jeans, the long-term impacts on our health are serious.
Here’s a scary thought: the people using Ozempic today might face an accelerated aging process in the years to come. Lower muscle mass is closely tied to frailty and reduced mobility as we age, which can lower the quality of life dramatically. Not to mention, research published in The Lancet suggests that muscle loss is closely tied to cognitive health—meaning that losing muscle can even increase the risk of cognitive decline. Muscle is like our body’s armor—it keeps us strong, helps our metabolism, protects our joints, and supports our bones. Lose too much muscle, and we compromise more than just our weight goals; we give up a core element of long-term health.

In addition to the muscle loss, there are other risks tied to taking Semaglutide (I’m not writing this to be some fear-mongering monster, I just think it’s extremely important to consider all risks when consuming ANYTHING):

These symptoms can be uncomfortable and may lead to dehydration, negatively affecting overall health and performance in workouts. The stress of sudden weight changes can lead to dehydration and imbalances in electrolytes, further compromising kidney function. Healthy kidneys are essential for filtering waste and maintaining overall fluid balance, so any risk to them should be taken seriously.
Mental Health Effects:
The psychological impact of using a medication for weight loss can also be significant. Relying on Ozempic may lead to an unhealthy relationship with food and body image. When weight loss is solely tied to medication, it can perpetuate a mindset where success feels unattainable without it. Tips for Weight Loss Without Ozempic
I recently read an incredible article by Kenz on “how you can replicate ozempic results naturally”, including tips like incorporating apple cider vinegar before your meals and upping your fiber intake to help stimulate your GLP-1 production. She really nailed it here so I don’t have much to add except for a few other general (but extremely impactful) reminders!
Whole Foods:
Focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods—fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats. These foods nourish your body and help you feel full.
Strength Training:
Incorporate strength training into your routine a couple of times a week. Building muscle helps maintain metabolism during weight loss.
Stay Hydrated:
Drink plenty of (filtered!!) water. Staying hydrated can help control hunger and support your metabolism.
Mindful Eating:
Slow down during meals. Pay attention to your body’s hunger cues and savor your food to avoid overeating. I personally like take 3-5 deep breaths and release the “ahhh” sound as I exhale, as well as give thanks to my food to give it some good energy before entering my body. This also helps calm my nervous system down which will aid with digestion.
Find Activities You Enjoy:
Choose physical activities that you genuinely like, whether it’s cycling, dancing, hiking, or just walking. Enjoyment is key to consistency.
Prioritize Sleep:
Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. Lack of sleep can disrupt your appetite hormones and hinder weight loss efforts.
Manage Stress:
Stress can lead to emotional eating. Explore techniques like meditation or simple breathing exercises to help manage stress levels.
Set Realistic Goals:
Focus on gradual weight loss and building long-term habits. Celebrate small victories—each step counts.
